Afghanistan: Surrender in Disguise

John

The U.S. has at last negotiated an agreement with the Taliban for US Forces to withdraw from Afghanistan, the longest war in US history. But that agreement was reached without the participation of the Afghan government.

Wow: Shades of Vietnam. In Paris in 1973 the U.S. negotiated with the Government of North Vietnam for the withdrawal of US forces from South Vietnam. The Government of South Vietnam was not invited to Paris for the negotiations….

The rest is history. US Forces in South Vietnam started turning over equipment and security responsibilities to ARVN (South Vietnam army). The US began to totally withdraw military forces from South Vietnam.

In return the many US military personnel, mainly aviators, held as Prisoners of War (POW) in North Vietnam were released. As a military person whose combat experience in Southeast Asia was spread over nine calendar years, I was thrilled by the POW release! As a military person who understood the situation, I was very discouraged by our abandonment of our South Vietnam allies, and their resulting assured eventual defeat. In April 1975 South Vietnam fell to the North Vietnam invasion.

I see a parallel situation in Afghanistan. The Taliban promised us they would not support such organizations as Al-Qaeda and Islamic State, who currently represent the main threat to the Afghan government and the Afghan people. We have a piece of paper in hand, and soon will have no troops on the ground in Afghanistan.

Looking at U.S. military history, the only time we have returned to a battlefield after total evacuation (World War I) was Western Europe (World War II).

Sayonara to Afghanistan, especially its women…
