Fall Harvests

Ewa Nowogorski

Fall is the season of dying plants. It is also the season of harvest in Japan. It is during this time that most farmers harvest the last of their crop for the year and rest their fields for the cold winter that follows, preparing it for the coming spring.

Fall in Japan doesn’t get too cold. In fact, you can probably go outside wearing just some casual jeans and a sweater all the way up until mid-December. It’s thanks to Japan being an island nation that it can enjoy such tropical weather.

Japan has 2 harvest times for rice: April–May to August–October in central Japan and from April -May to August–September in Southern Japan. Autumn is the season for shinmai, newly harvested rice. About 85% of the 2.3 million farms in Japan plant rice yearly. It is important that rice crops get enough rain during the spring-summer planting season, and that they are not obliterated by typhoons in the summer-fall planting season. Japan starts to see a lot of typhoons greeting it during autumn, and many farmers around Japan are often impacted when a typhoon with strong rain and wind hits their farm. It can devastate entire farms, leading to tens of thousands of dollars worth of damage.

The best fruit to eat during the fall season are persimmons, apples, figs, Japanese pears, loquats, kiwis, and mandarine oranges.
