The whole world is panicking with the coronavirus pandemic. Businesses and schools are closing down, and the day-to-day lives of most people are being severely disrupted. Many countries and cities are implementing lockdowns where the public is not allowed to go outside, and must instead stay home and self-isolate.
Most hard-hit places have done so: New York, Seoul, Sydney, Paris, Berlin, etc. You would think that a place as affected as Japan would also follow suite, but the government has remained hesitant about administering lockdown measures. Obviously, the economy would take an extremely hard hit, but so many other places around the world have as well. In Japan, the government must also compensate every living body with 100,000 yen (about $1000 USD) for every month that they are out of work for a government decision.
The government has been “recommending” that certain businesses close temporarily to avoid the mandatory payment that they would have to make. It is frustrating for small businesses that are socially pressured to comply because they end up with no compensation. But although the number of cases continues to increase, people are actually pretty glad that there is no official lockdown here because they would rather be free to work and go outside as they please.
