I could make a list, but that would be too easy. Instead, I want you to think about this.
Start with thinking about what is popular. What is logical. Popular places are usually either culturally reinforced or it is a place that makes sense to visit because of the weather changes. Now, if you want to go somewhere unpopular think of what would be a strange place visit during the summer. For example, during the winter few people want to go to the beach. But some people do. Surfers in particular are known to be surfing in places despite the cold weather.
How about going North instead of South? What’s going on in the town of Wakanai during the summer? What about going to an Onsen and testing your physical limits (make sure to drink lots of water). If you want to go somewhere unusual you have to think on your own, because if someone else has thought of it and posted it somewhere, it probably won’t be that unusual. What more, what is unusual is something YOU will have decide. If you’ve never tried cave-exploring, maybe that’s the unusual thing for you to do. Think outside the box or maybe more importantly, think about Why you want to go somewhere unusual. Is it the lack of people? Is it a new experience? Or are you just a travel-hungry madman?
