Can a man get sexually harrassed? Can a man even get raped? Well, of course they can! They are sometimes vulnerable to unwanted attention to, although maybe not as often and not as widely reported as cases with women. It does exist in more subtle forms, even in Japan.
According to one survey on the PR TIMES website, as many as 50% of men who filled out the survey claimed to have experienced sexual harrassment. I know it sounds surreal, with all the reports that come in being solely from women reporting men as the harrassers. But here some patterns of sexual harrassment against men will be discussed.
Sexual harassment usually happens in the form of a senior coworker or boss attacking a younger junior or subordinate. Some men have reported that their female bosses have asked them inappropriate questions about their sex lives, invited them to eat dinner alone together, and sometimes touched them inappropriately in a drunken stupor. Somen men have even been harassed by other men, who even more inappropriately touched them in particular places, trying to do so subtly.
Shockingly or maybe not so shockingly, most men do not report these sexual harrassment cases, and a lot of men don’t do anything at all. Maybe they will consult with a coworker, or if they are brave enough they will directly tell the harrasser to stop. But doing so can obviously bring about animosity in the social circle, and working in that kind of social environment can become hard.
But whether you are a man or a woman, if you are ever harrassed by someone in any way, you shouldn’t keep quiet about it. It’s not shameful, and there is always someone out there who will help you.
